UI ASUU Begins One-Week Warning Strike

Academic activities in the University of Ibadan will be paralysed for one-week as the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, has threatened to commence on a warning strike over over illegal pension deductions, fractional salary payments and non-payment of supervision allowance.
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), University of Ibadan Chapter, has declared a one-week warning strike over illegal pension deductions, fractional salary payments and non-payment of supervision allowance.

The decision was taken on Tuesday at a congress convened by the union and presided over by its Chairman, Deji Omole.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that members also complained about excessive deductions in their March salaries.
The management of the university was also alleged to have failed to declare the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) profile of the university.

According to Mr. Omole, the warning strike is, therefore, to compel the university administration to address the issues which ASUU said bordered on the welfare of her members who are being owed since 2010.

“The congress of ASUU, UNIBADAN, at its meeting of 4th April, 2017, having received permission from the national body of the union, hereby, declare a one-week warning strike.
“The warning strike will commence from 12:01 midnight of Tuesday, 4th April, to 12:00 midnight of Tuesday, 11th April, 2017.

“The congress of the union maintains that the failure of the university administration to satisfactorily resolve all the issues, will force the union to proceed on a comprehensive and total strike,” said Mr. Omole.

The congress, which was well attended, was also addressed by the national delegates of ASUU, which included Mahmood Lawan, from Kano; Tony Monye-Emina, from Benin and Bebe Sese, from Port Harcourt.

NAN recalls that the union had in a congress resolution in March warned the university management to address its grievances, bordering on reversal of illicit deductions and non-payment of promotion arrears.

The three non-academic staff unions of the institution had also been on strike since March 13, grounding administrative activities in the institution. (NAN)

House of Reps Orders JAMB To Extend 2017 UTME Registration Deadline

The House of Representatives has called on the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB to extend the registration deadline for the registration of 2017 UTME.
This came after the motion raised by Danburan Nahu (Kano-APC).

According to Mr. Nuhu during the 2016 UTME exercise, about 1.6 million applicants registered for the UTME and about one million passed. He stated that the 2017 exercise might reach 2 million across the country given the growing number of applicants.

He noted that some of the approved registration centres are registering only 250 applicants at a time; most of them do not have enough space and adequate number of computers.
He urged JAMB to specify the requirements including safety measures, that approved centres need to have to participate in the conduct of UTME Computer Based Test and ensure to deploy safety equipment to each centre to forestall any incidence of stampede due to overcrowding.

The motion was unanimously adopted by the House and the committee on basic education was mandated to direct JAMB to comply with the resolutions.

The JAMB had earlier stated that it has no plans of extending the registration deadline but with this development, let's watch how it all plays out.

UK to test driverless shuttle on the streets of London

Members of the British public are getting their first extended trial of a driverless shuttle bus.
Over the next three weeks, about 100 people will travel in a prototype shuttle on a route in Greenwich, London.

The vehicle, which travels up to 10mph (16.1kmph), will be controlled by a computer.

However, there will be a trained person on board who can stop the shuttle if required.

Oxbotica, the firm that developed the shuttle, said 5,000 members of the public had applied to take part in the study.

"Very few people have experienced an autonomous vehicle, so this about letting people see one in person," chief executive Graeme Smith told the BBC.

"We hope to gain acceptance from members of the public for vehicles sharing this kind of space with them.
"We are also looking at how people in the vehicle respond when being transported from A to B."
'Fail-safe'

The shuttle seats four people and has no steering wheel or brake pedal.
During the trial, five cameras and three lasers will help it navigate a two-mile riverside path near London's O2 Arena, an area also used by pedestrians and cyclists.

It can see up to 100m (328ft) ahead and comes to a steady stop if it detects something in its path - although it can also do an emergency brake if required.
"It's been designed to be safe and fail-safe specifically in a pedestrianised environment," Dr Smith said.

Officials behind the Gateway Project believe the shuttles could improve transport links in Greenwich.
They say paying passengers could begin using the system by 2019 on a trial basis and that it could eventually be rolled out elsewhere.

Industry Minister Nick Hurd said: "The UK has a history of innovation in the auto sector and this type of technology has the potential to save lives as well as offer freedom to the elderly or those with mobility impairments."

OTHER TRIALS

It is not the first time that people have been invited to travel in tests of autonomous road vehicles in Britain.
At a recent trial in Milton Keynes, Oxbotica allowed journalists to try its driverless cars and a traffic warden was granted a wish to come along for a ride.
Members of the public have also tested driverless road vehicles elsewhere in the world.

In January, Las Vegas trialled an autonomous bus that ferried passengers up and down Fremont Street in the city's historic zone amid traffic.

And in August 2016, Singaporean firm nuTonomy claimed to have become the first company to offer driverless rides to the public via its taxi app.

Its rides are only offered via a small number of cars in a 2.5-sq-mile area of the city state, and pick-ups and drop-offs are limited to specific locations.

You Can Now Easily Pay And Get Your JAMB ePIN Using Remita Platform

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has disclosed that candidates can now pay for the ePIN for 2017 UTME registration using Remita platform.
According to JAMB in a statement release by the Head of Media, Dr Fabian, this development is due to the challenges faced by candidates in acquiring the ePIN form banks and NIPOST.

“We appreciate the fact that the sales of the UTME for 2017 which is hitherto set to last for six has been reduced to one month. “This was done in the interest of the candidates as it was to ensure that the challenges candidates are going through are resolved.

“To further cushion the effect of these challenges, we have decided to bring the Remitta mode on board. “Candidates can now purchase the pin for registration from the comfort of their homes.

“So, aside the banks and NIPOST, candidates can now purchase the pins through Remita,’’ Benjamin said in a statement.
The statement further advised candidates not to panic as every eligible candidate desirous of registering will do so before the closing date of April 19.

TO MAKE PAYMENT VIA REMITA, FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW;

JAMB Direct Entry Candidates Will Sit For Aptitide Test, Not UTME

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that candidates applying for JAMB Direct Entry will not be sitting for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).

However, Direct Entry Students will sit for an aptitude test in the university they selected as their choice.
This was disclosed by the Head of Information, JAMB, Mr. Fabian Benjamin in a telephone interview with newsmen.

He said, “Direct Entry candidates will attempt an aptitude test which is school-based. They are not sitting for the UTME. The test is from the universities. Matriculated Students In Any Institution Are Not Allowed To Take UTME - JAMB PRO

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has stated that candidates who are already matriculated students of any tertiary institution are not allowed to site for UTME.
He made this know during a phone conversation with newsmen on Monday.

According to him, "Students with matriculation numbers of universities are not eligible to sit for the UTME. If they are not satisfied with their chosen disciplines, they can ask for transfer."

On the issues of extension of deadline due to hitches, he said, “We registered 600,000 candidates in 10 days and if we go on at this pace, it means we would have registered 1.2million in 20 days. We want Nigerians to be patient and every eligible candidate will be registered by April 19, when the registration will close."
