Trump v Clinton: Who won the debate?

Hi We were promised a nuclear war between the candidates over allegations of sexual impropriety, and it didn't take long for it to blow up.

But unlike a real nuclear war, with its mutually assured destruction, the participants were left standing after the exchange and had to slug it out for another hour.

What resulted was a muddled mess, with both candidates gaining the upper hand on occasion and stumbling in other moments.

Given that Mr Trump's campaign has been in freefall over the past 48 hours, anything less than a total Jack-Nicholson-at-the-end-of-A-Few-Good-Men style meltdown onstage has to be deemed a marginal success on his part, and so it was.

The prospect that any significant portion of what is sure to be a massive television audience emerged from the evening with any change of opinion, however, is unlikely.

If Mr Trump's overarching goal was to offer a performance that would allow him to cobble together an electoral majority on election day, then his sometimes glowering, often aggressive performance will fall far short.

Team Clinton, on other hand, has to view this as an opportunity missed.

Her supporters were hoping for a political kill shot that would push Mr Trump's remaining supporters toward the exit and turn the last month of the campaign into a glorified mop-up operation.

While she landed some staggering blows, it was by no means a rout. Instead, both candidates will likely emerge bloodied but not beaten.

Mrs Clinton still has by far the easiest path to the White House, but she'll have to work for a few more weeks to earn it.

Here are some key moments from the debate, and how it played out for the two contenders.

Donald Trump uncensored

Mr Trump's candid, lurid discussion of his (often unwelcome) sexual exploits has dominated the US political world for the last two days, and they were front-and-centre from the beginning of the debate. After a few feints and some pressure from moderator Anderson Cooper, the American public got the exchange they were all expecting and, quite likely, tuning in to see.

It began with Mr Trump asserting that "nobody has more respect for women than I do" - a response that had the reporters in the media work room snickering. Then Mrs Clinton took her shot.

"I think it's clear to anyone who heard [the tape] that it represents exactly who he is," she said.

"Because we've seen this throughout the campaign."

And from there, the gloves came off. After dismissing his recording as "locker room talk" for which he was sorry, Mr Trump unloaded every bit of malicious allegation and rumour he had.

He essentially accused former President Bill Clinton of rape. He dinged Mrs Clinton's 1970s work as a public defender representing a rapist.

He ended it all by saying that as president he would order a federal investigation into Mrs Clinton that would end up with her imprisonment.

It was easily the most tawdry exchange in 56 years of televised presidential debates - one that will likely cast a shadow over US politics for years to come.

Mrs Clinton may have emerged the beneficiary, but the nation was the worse for it.

The Clinton trust factor

Mrs Clinton probably would have been satisfied if the debate had ended with that exchange, but that was just the beginning. The next few rounds would put her on her heels and prove that Mr Trump had learned a few lessons from his prior debate shortcomings.

Mrs Clinton was forced, once again, to explain her use of a private email server as secretary of state and, unlike the first debate, after saying she regretted the decision she quickly became mired in a more detailed explanation. Mr Trump then carved up her team's unsupervised deletion of emails on the server that they deemed not work-related.

"If you did that in the private sector, you'd be put in jail, let alone after getting a subpoena from the United States Congress," he said.

Mr Trump also went on the attack when Mrs Clinton was forced to respond to excerpts of her Wall Street speeches that were acquired by hackers possibly tied to the Russian government and released by Wikileaks.

Mrs Clinton - quite remarkably - didn't deny that the documents were authentic.

Instead, she opted to explain her comments about having different public and private policy positions by saying it was a reference to a film about Abraham Lincoln.

"Honest Abe never lied," Mr Trump shot back. "That's the big difference between Abraham Lincoln and you."

Time and time again, Mr Trump hammered Mrs Clinton on the trust issue - which polls show is one of her greatest weaknesses. He repeatedly cited her primary opponent, Bernie Sanders, who said she showed a lack of judgement.

Unlike the previous debate, he showed something akin to message discipline and left Mrs Clinton staggered.

US election: Trump launches ferocious attack on Clintons

By Donald Trump has defended his obscene remarks about groping women by launching a blistering attack against Hillary Clinton and her husband.

The Republican nominee denied ever sexually assaulting women, but turned his fire on ex-President Bill Clinton in a bitter US presidential debate.

"There's never been anybody in the history of politics that has been so abusive to women," he said.
Hillary Clinton refused to address his comments about her husband.

Mr Trump's attack on the Clintons came after moderator Anderson Cooper asked him about a 2005 video recording released on Friday that revealed Mr Trump bragging about groping women.

But when pressed on whether he had engaged in sexual misconduct with any women, he denied doing so and instead focused on Mr Clinton's previous indiscretions.

No criminal charges have been brought against Mr Clinton in any allegations of sexual assault.

Mrs Clinton said the explosive video, which has sparked an exodus of Republicans denying support to their presidential nominee, showed who Mr Trump really was.

"With prior Republican nominees, I disagreed with them," she added, "but I never questioned their fitness to serve.

"I think it's clear to anyone who heard [the video] that it represents exactly who he is."

When the two took to the stage in St Louis for their second of three debates, they did not shake hands, striking a bitter tone that would continue throughout.

Mr Trump said if he won, he would appoint a special prosecutor to investigate Mrs Clinton and she would be in prison over her private email arrangements.

"Everything he just said is absolutely false but I'm not surprised," she responded. "It's just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country."

"Because you'd be in jail," he interrupted.

Mr Trump also said his Democratic rival "has tremendous hate in her heart" while criticising her for referring to his supporters as "deplorables".

Mrs Clinton said she apologised for the comment, adding: "My argument is not with his supporters, it's with him, about the hateful and divisive campaign he has run."

The two also sparred on the conflict in Syria, Russian aggression, Trump's refusal to release his tax returns and his plan for the "extreme vetting" of immigrants arriving from countries with links to terrorism.

The evening concluded when an audience member asked the candidates to say one positive thing about each other.

Mrs Clinton said his children were a great reflection of him while Mr Trump called his opponent "a fighter" who never gives up.

An hour before the debate began, Mr Trump appeared at a press conference with women who accused Bill Clinton of sexual misconduct.

He joined three women who allege the former president sexually assaulted them and called the women "very courageous".

The Republican was under immense pressure after making obscene comments about women in the video.

At least 33 senior Republicans - including senators, members of Congress, and state governors - have withdrawn their support since the video surfaced on Friday.

Analysis - Anthony Zurcher

Donald Trump entered this debate threatening to unload every bit of malicious allegations and rumours on Hillary Clinton. And he did.

Accusations of Bill Clinton's sexual impropriety? Check. Her work as a public defender representing a rapist? Yup. He even tied it up in a bow by remarking that his Democratic opponent should be in jail.

Mrs Clinton said she would take the high road, but she did get in her shots as well, saying the illicit video of Mr Trump's lewd comments showed who he really is.

And then, after that nuclear exchange, the debate chugged along - with Mr Trump often gaining the upper hand. If his weakness is policy knowledge, there were few opportunities where his shortcoming were exposed.

Instead, there was plenty of time for Mrs Clinton to offer a yet another muddled answer on her email server and essentially confirm that the Wikileaks hacked speech excerpts are accurate. Mr Trump offered word salads in answers about healthcare reform and Syria policy. If anything, from there the debate was a draw.
With Mrs Clinton ahead right now, a draw will probably suit her just fine. But it wasn't the knock-out blow her supporters probably hoped for.

* What else came up at debate?
Mr Trump said he had not paid federal income tax in 18 years because he knew the tax code well

* He constantly complained to the moderators that he was not getting fair treatment

* On Syria, Mrs Clinton said she would not advocate the use of US ground forces

* She promised that no-one making less than $250,000 will pay higher taxes but richer people will

* Mr Trump also admitted he and running mate Mike Pence disagreed about use of force in Syria

* But he refused to answer when moderator Martha Raddatz pressed him for a military strategy

* Mrs Clinton also defended controversial remarks she made in a private speech that was made public in leaked emails on Saturday.

The transcript had revealed she said a politician has a public and private position, but at the debate she said she had watched a film about Abraham Lincoln and was referring only to what he had done.

So Who Are The Women?

Mr Trump appeared with Paula Jones, a former Arkansas state employee who settled a sexual harassment suit against Mr Clinton for $850,000 in 1999 with no admission of guilt.
Juanita Broaddrick, who claimed Mr Clinton raped her in a hotel room in 1978, also appeared with Mr Trump.
Mr Clinton has denied the claim through his lawyer and no charges have ever been brought against him.
The third woman was Kathleen Willey, a former White House aide who said Mr Clinton groped her in his office in 1993, but had previously said it never happened.
Mr Clinton has also denied this claim.
Kathy Shelton, a fourth woman who spoke, encountered Mrs Clinton in a criminal case when she was 12 years old.
Early in Mrs Clinton's legal career, she was appointed to defend Ms Shelton's rapist, despite objections, and had his sentence reduced to a lesser charge.
Years later, an audio tape emerged of Mrs Clinton speaking with a reporter, in which she can be heard laughing about the case.
During one instance, she laughed after explaining that her client had passed a lie detector test, which convinced her to never trust them again.

Despite lewd tape scandal, Trump does better than expected against Clinton in second US Presidential debate

In the second
US Presidential debate today, a petulant Republican candidate
Donald Trump interrupted Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton numerous times, denied that he kissed and groped women without their consent, pretty much admitted he didn't pay taxes for more than a decade and demonstrated he had no plan to improve US healthcare and no strategy to deal with ISIS .

And yet, at the end of the 90-odd minute bitter, often nasty debate, it appeared Trump fared better than expected against Clinton, especially in the second half, after the issue of his filthy comments about women was out of the way. Still, it was by no means a win for Trump who behaved like an ill-brought up child throughout, with his constant interruptions and his carping about not being given enough time.

Clinton may even have emerged slightly ahead of him, as she remained poised, answered questions to the point and worked the stage beautifully - in this townhall-style debate - unlike Trump who was throughout seen as stiff and wooden, rooted as he was to a specific spot on the stage.

Clinton came out ahead in bashing Islamophobia, outlining a coherent policy about US healthcare, defining a clear strategy on how to deal with ISIS, hinting that Trump is a Russian stooge and proving beyond the shadow of a doubt that Trump is a dangerous misogynist. She faltered on the issue of her deleted emails and couldn't ably defend her recently leaked comments about having "separate private and public positions".

Trump failed to demonstrate he was truly sorry about his lewd comments about women and clearly demonstrated he doesn't have a grip on economic and foreign policy. But he went at Clinton, hard, by repeating that she deleted emails after she was subpoenaed, and he managed to rattle her. He especially scored one over her when she defended her leaked comments about having separate public and private position issues by alluding to Abraham Lincoln.

"Honest Abe never lied. That's the big difference between Abe Lincoln and you ,"he said to Clinton, who cited Lincoln's style of Presidential leadership in using separate positions to "get Congress to do what you want to do."

Still, for the first 50-odd minutes Clinton dominated the debate as she hammered home the point that regardless of Trump's apologies, the release last Friday of tapes featuring extremely lewd and offensive comments from him about groping and kissing women "clearly represented who he is".

"He says the video doesn't represent who he is. But it's clear it does. If this is were just about one video, maybe what he's saying is understandable, but (now) everyone can draw their own conclusion about whether the man on stage respects women or not. We've seen him insult women throughout the campaign," Clinton said after Trump regurgitated his weekend apology, dismissing his lewd comments as "locker room talk."

Trump countered Clinton saying there has "never been anybody in the history of politics that's been so abusive to women" as Clinton's husband and former President Bill was. "Hillary attacked those same women", Trump argued, but couldn't take his comments much further than that.

Clinton took on Trump's position on immigrants to highlight how divisive the Republican candidate has made the US. She talked about how he never apologized to a federal judge who was born in Indiana to Mexican parents. Trump had said the judge couldn't be trusted. He also insulted the family of a US army captain Humayun Khan who was killed in Iraq in 2004 when a car blew up after he told his troops to stand back.

"He (Trump) runs his campaign any way he chooses without talking about agenda. He has never apologized to the people he insulted. That's hia choice. When I hear his statements I'm reminded of what my friend Michelle Obama said. 'When they go low, you go high.' And he's never apologized for the racist lie about Obama not being American. He owes Obama and the country and apology," Clinton said.

In his response to that, Trump didn't refer to his hateful comments. Instead, he said that it was Clinton who should apologize for using a private email server when she was US Secretary of State and for deleting 33,000 emails. He threatened that if he's elected President, he would instruct the Attorney General to appoint a special prosecutor to look into the emails issue.

"...There have never been so many lies, so much deception, when I speak I see that people in the country are furious (about this).
Long-time FBI workers are furious," Trump said. When Clinton countered that he's spreading falsehoods and said "it's awfully good someone like Trump isn't in charge of the country," Trump interrupted saying, "Yes, you'd be in jail."

Clinton, then, perhaps the only time during the debate when she lost her cool, said: Okay Donald, I know you want a big diversion, because of your campaign and the way it is exploding. (But) let me focus on the issues."

After that, the 90-minute debate descended into a bitter confrontation with each candidate pointing fingers at the other.

And at the end of the debate, when an audience member asked what quality the candidates admired most in each other, Trump's response was the clear winner.

Clinton went with the safe option of saying she admires Trump's children. Trump, for once, answered a debate question directly. "She (Clinton) fights hard and doesn't give up and that's what I admire about her," Trump said.

Unfortunately for Trump, he may have just described what will make Hillary Clinton the next US President.

Samsung recall crisis deepens; Yonhap reports Note 7 production halt

Hi By SEOUL: Samsung Electronics Co Ltd has suspended production if its Galaxy Note 7 smartphones following reports of fires in replacement devices, South Korean media said on Monday, a further setback for the tech giant trying to manage its worst ever phone recall crisis.

. . Samsung's decision to temporarily halt Note 7 production was done in cooperation with authorities in China and the United States, as two U.S. carriers have stopped exchanging or selling new Note 7 phones, Yonhap News Agency cited an unnamed source at a Samsung partner firm as saying.

Samsung did not immediately comment on the Yonhap report.

Problems with replacements for the Note 7 model would create a new and potentially costly chapter to a global scandal which has hurt the reputation of the world's biggest smartphone maker. It also could add new dangers for consumers.

. . AT&T Inc, the No.2 US wireless carrier, said on Sunday it will stop exchanging new Note 7 smartphones due to reports of fires from replacement devices that Samsung has said used safe batteries.

. . No.3 wireless carrier T-Mobile US Inc said it was temporarily halting sales of new Note 7s as well as exchanges while Samsung investigated "multiple reports of issues" with its flagship device.

. . T-Mobile offered customers who brought in their Note 7s a $25 credit on their phone bill.

. . Samsung announced on Sept. 2 a global recall of 2.5 million Note 7s in 10 markets including the United States due to faulty batteries causing some of the phones to catch fire.

. . A Southwest Airline flight was evacuated earlier this week after a replacement model Note 7 smartphone began smoking inside the plane, according to the family who owns the phone.

. . Samsung earlier said it was investigating reports of "heat damage issues" and would share its findings when the investigation is complete.

. . "If we determine a product safety issue exists, Samsung will take immediate steps approved by the CPSC (U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission) to resolve the situation," Samsung told Reuters in a statement.

. . Samsung shares were down 3.3 percent as of 0125 GMT, compared with a 0.1 percent fall for the broader market.

. . "I thought the Note 7 matter was coming to an end, but it's becoming an issue again," Alpha Asset Management fund manager CJ Heo said.

. . Samsung should be able to recover from the short-term reputational damage of the recalls, but fourth-quarter sales of the Note 7 would be hurt, he added.

. . South Korea's largest mobile carrier, SK Telecom , said it was closely monitoring the situation and would not comment further. KT Corp, the No.2 South Korean carrier, said it had taken no steps in regards to sales or exchange of new Note 7s.

Only 4% of South Africans who start school get a degree

New research shows that two-thirds of matriculants with Bachelor passes go to university, and that university access of qualifying students is not biased against black or poor students.

For every 100 students who start school in South Africa, only 12 go to university, and only four of them get a degree within six years.
This is one of the findings in the academic paper Higher Education Access and Outcomes for the 2008 National Matric Cohort .

The research used data that combines matric examinations data from 2008 to 2013, with data from all South African universities from 2009 to 2014. It also used data from the EMIS Masterlist and the 2011 national census.

The insights derived from the research included:
*Approximately one-third of matriculants who obtained Bachelor passes never go to university.

*When considering matriculants who obtained Bachelor passes, overall university access is not biased against black students or significantly biased against students from poorer schools.

*A large proportion of matriculants who do go to university do not enter university in the year following matric, but only one or more years later.

*Matric marks are a good indicator of university access, but are only weakly related to eventual university success.

*There are extremely large differences across universities in the average matric performance of students who attend these universities.

*It takes a long time for many students to successfully obtain university qualifications.

*Dropout rates at university, though high, are not as high as are often reported, because many students who are considered “dropouts” only changed their degree programme, switched from a degree to a diploma or certificate programme, or enrolled in a different university.

The research found that matrics who attend expensive, quality schools are four-times more likely to access university than those from the poorest 60% of schools.

The Qualifications Hierarchy

The research found that of 100 students who start school in South Africa:
* 12 access university
* 6 get some kind of qualification           within six years
*4 get a degree within six years

2016 noble prize in Chemistry goes to 3 molecular engineers

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 to

Jean-Pierre Sauvage
University of Strasbourg, France

Sir J. Fraser Stoddart
Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, USA

and

Bernard L. Feringa
University of Groningen, the Netherlands

"for the design and synthesis of molecular machines"

They developed the world's smallest machines

A tiny lift, artificial muscles and miniscule motors. The Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2016 is awarded to
Jean-Pierre Sauvage , Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Bernard L. Feringa for their design and production of molecular machines. They have developed molecules with controllable movements, which can perform a task when energy is added.

The development of computing demonstrates how the miniaturisation of technology can lead to a revolution. The 2016 Nobel Laureates in Chemistry have miniaturised machines and taken chemistry to a new dimension.

The first step towards a molecular machine was taken by Jean-Pierre Sauvage in 1983, when he succeeded in linking two ring-shaped molecules together to form a chain, called a catenane . Normally, molecules are joined by strong covalent bonds in which the atoms share electrons, but in the chain they were instead linked by a freer
mechanical bond . For a machine to be able to perform a task it must consist of parts that can move relative to each other. The two interlocked rings fulfilled exactly this requirement.

The second step was taken by Fraser Stoddart in 1991, when he developed a rotaxane. He threaded a molecular ring onto a thin molecular axle and demonstrated that the ring was able to move along the axle.

Among his developments based on rotaxanes are a molecular lift, a molecular muscle and a molecule-based computer chip.

Bernard Feringa was the first person to develop a molecular motor; in 1999 he got a molecular rotor blade to spin continually in the same direction. Using molecular motors, he has rotated a glass cylinder that is 10,000 times bigger than the motor and also designed a nanocar.

2016's Nobel Laureates in Chemistry have taken molecular systems out of equilibrium's stalemate and into energy-filled states in which their movements can be controlled. In terms of development, the molecular motor is at the same stage as the electric motor was in the 1830s, when scientists displayed various spinning cranks and wheels, unaware that they would lead to electric trains, washing machines, fans and food processors. Molecular machines will most likely be used in the development of things such as new materials, sensors and energy storage systems.

Trump attacks colleges on endowments, calls for more student aid

But has Hillary Clinton left Republican candidate in shade on college affordability?

‘We have to deal with these universities’: Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump addresses a Pennsylvania rally

“Trump stumbles on good idea.” That was the backhanded compliment in one headline after Donald Trump said he wanted to see universities spending their “tax-free” and “multibillion-dollar” endowments to lower tuition fees for students.

The comments, at a rally in Pennsylvania on 22 September, were the Republican presidential candidate’s first real statement on college affordability. By contrast, Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton – whom Mr Trump faced in the first presidential debate on 26 September – has made it one of her biggest policy priorities.

Mr Trump’s comments come at a time of growing concern across the political spectrum about how the wealthiest universities use their endowments. But when it comes to college affordability, has Ms Clinton left him in the shade on a vital issue with voters?

US universities lead the world in the size of their endowments, of course. Harvard University has the largest, with a value of $35.7 billion (£27.5 billion), followed by
Yale University with $25.4 billion.

Mr Trump’s rally speech saw him accuse universities of failing to use their endowment income to benefit students. “Instead these universities use the money to pay their administrators, to put donors’ names on their buildings, or just store the money, keep it and invest it,” he said.
He also tried to signal an awareness of graduate debt: “The students are choking on those loans…And it’s something I hear more and more and it’s one of the things I hear more than anything else.”

“We have to deal with these universities”, he also said.

Mr Trump was echoing proposals from some Republicans in Congress, who have put forward a draft bill that would mean universities with endowments of over $1 billion would have to devote 25 per cent of annual endowment income for student financial aid or lose tax-exempt status.

Concern about the use of endowments is evident beyond the Republican Party.

The Education Trust, a non-profit advocacy group campaigning “for the high academic achievement of all students – particularly those of colour or living in poverty”,
published a report on endowment spending in August this year.

Andrew Nichols, the group’s director of higher education research and data analytics, said: “As college continues to become more and more unaffordable for Americans, no group feels this burden like students from low-income families. If they choose to do so, institutions with extreme amounts of wealth can alleviate this burden today.

“In our study, we found that the 138 institutions with over $500 million in endowment assets were asking students from low-income families to pay – on average – nearly $13,000 each year to attend. This is unconscionable.

“As policy conversations on endowment spending go forward, it is critical that students from low-income backgrounds are kept front and centre.”

Reports on Mr Trump’s speech did not indicate that he made any specific mention of low-income students.

His endowment comments were seen as an attempt to reach out to the millennial voters courted by Ms Clinton with her college affordability plan, but in a way that would not involve any public spending.
Mr Trump had previously offered little on college affordability.

However, some insight into Mr Trump’s potential higher education policies was offered earlier this year by the national co-chair and policy director of his campaign, Sam Clovis, who is an economics professor at
Morningside College.

He indicated that the campaign was working on higher education plans including moving the federal government out of loan provision, with banks taking over and colleges taking a share of loan risk.

By contrast, Ms Clinton has given a high-profile pledge that would ultimately mean students from families with incomes up to $125,000 – around 80 per cent of US households – paying no tuition at public universities in their state.
Her aides have stated an estimated cost of $500 billion over 10 years, according to media reports.

Inside Higher Ed noted that not many institutions possess the “multibillion-dollar” endowments cited by Mr Trump, saying that presently about 50 colleges and universities came into that bracket.
That might raise questions about whether leveraging spending from large endowments would help enough students nationally.

Neil Gross, a professor of sociology at Colby College and author of Why Are Professors Liberal and Why Do Conservatives Care?, said Mr Trump’s idea “makes no sense and shows how out of touch with reality his campaign is”.

Noting the “tiny minority of US colleges and universities” with large endowments, he added: “Most of these wealthy schools already deeply discount tuition for students from disadvantaged backgrounds.

“It’s the under-resourced sector of American higher education that we need to beef up, and the only way to do that is with an infusion of public funds.”

Nobel Prize in Physics 2016 announced

This year’s Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to three men for their work on matter in “strange states”.

David Thouless, Duncan Haldane and Michael Kosterlitz were all born in the UK, but are now based in the United States at the
University of Washington,
Princeton University and Brown University respectively.

They all used topology – a type of mathematics that looks at step-wise changes in states – to explore strange matter phases such as superconductivity and superfluidity.

“Thanks to their pioneering work, the hunt is now on for new and exotic phases of matter. Many people are hopeful of future applications in both materials science and electronics,” said the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, which awards the prizes.

All three scientists studied extremely thin matter, which can be considered either two dimensional or even one dimensional.

In these “flatlands”, as the academy described them, physics is “very different" to what "we recognise in the world around us”.

“New collective phenomena are being continually discovered in these flatlands, and condensed matter physics is now one of the most vibrant fields in physics,” it
explained.

World Cup: Fifa president Gianni Infantino wants 48-team tournament

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has proposed expanding the World Cup finals to a 48-team tournament - a larger number than his election promise.

The Italian suggested 16 of those teams would be eliminated after one knockout match - before the group stages.

The rest of the tournament would be the same as it is now, with 32 teams competing in group stages followed by knockout rounds.

One of his election promises was to expand the finals to 40 teams.

Infantino said a decision would be taken by the governing body's council in January.

"These are ideas to find the best solution, we will debate them this month and we will decide everything by 2017," said the 46-year-old.
"They are ideas which we put forward to see which one is the best."

Infantino took charge of football's world governing body in February after the disgraced Sepp Blatter resigned.

Under his proposal, a preliminary knockout round in the host country would involve 32 teams with the winners reaching the groups, while a further 16 seeded teams would get a bye to that stage.

"It means we continue with a normal World Cup for 32 teams, but 48 teams go to the party," he added.

"Fifa's idea is to develop football in the whole world, and the World Cup is the biggest event there is. It's more than a competition, it's a social event."

US election 2016: Clinton rips into Trump over taxes

Hillary Clinton has attacked Donald Trump as the symbol of a "rigged system" after it emerged that he may not have paid income tax for 18 years.

"It's Trump first and everyone else last," said the Democratic presidential hopeful while campaigning in Ohio.

At the weekend, the New York Times claimed Mr Trump might have avoided tax due to a $1bn loss he made in 1995.

But the Republican tycoon declared on Monday it showed he had "brilliantly" navigated the complex tax code.

"I understand the tax laws better than almost anyone," he said, adding that as a hotel developer and businessman, he had "legally used the tax laws to my benefit and and to the benefit of my company".

His business acumen makes him uniquely qualified to reform the tax code, he told supporters in Colorado.

But his Democratic rival castigated him as a hypocrite because he casts himself as a change candidate who will reform the system in favour of working people.

"While millions of American families - including mine and yours - were working hard paying our fair share, it seems he was contributing nothing," said Mrs Clinton.

"Trump represents the same rigged system that he claims he's going to change."

The tax row is sure to be continued on Tuesday on the debate stage when the two candidates' running mates, Republican Governor Mike Pence and Democrat Tim Kaine, duel in Virginia.

Mr Trump has been on the defensive for a week, ever since the first presidential debate with Mrs Clinton in which he was widely thought to have been second best.

A CNN/ORC poll on Monday night suggests Mrs Clinton has received a post-debate bump.

With five weeks to go until the election, she has pulled five points ahead nationally according to the poll, and is getting away from him in some of the key battleground states.
Nearly three-quarters of those polled said Mr Trump should release his tax returns.

Russia suspends weapons-grade plutonium deal with US

Russia has suspended an agreement with the US on the disposal of surplus weapons-grade plutonium, the latest sign of worsening bilateral relations.

In a decree, President Vladimir Putin accused the US of creating "a threat to strategic stability, as a result of unfriendly actions" towards Russia.
Moscow also set pre-conditions for the US for the deal to be resumed.
Under the 2000 deal , each side is supposed to get rid of 34 tonnes of plutonium by burning it in reactors.
It is part of cuts to nuclear forces.
The US state department said the combined 68 tonnes of plutonium was "enough material for approximately 17,000 nuclear weapons". Both sides had reconfirmed the deal in 2010.
'We fulfilled our duties'
In Monday's decree (in Russian) , President Putin said Russia had to take "urgent measures to defend the security of the Russian Federation".

In April, Mr Putin said the US was failing to fulfil its obligations to destroy plutonium. Instead, he argued, the US reprocessing method allowed plutonium to be extracted and used again in nuclear weapons.
Both sides had agreed to build special facilities for disposing of the surplus plutonium.

"We fulfilled our duties, we built that enterprise. But our American partners did not," Mr Putin said.

The US rejected that claim, insisting that its disposal method did not violate the agreement.

Also on Monday, President Putin submitted a bill (in Russian) to parliament setting a series of pre-conditions for the US for the agreement to be resumed, including:

* Reduction of US military infrastructure and troops in countries that joined Nato after 1 September 2000

* Lifting of all US sanctions against Russia and compensation for the damage they have caused

The US - as well as the European Union - imposed a series of sanctions against Russia following the annexation by Moscow of Ukraine's southern Crimea peninsula in 2014, and Russia's support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

Tensions between Washington and Moscow rose further last month over Russia's bombing campaign in Syria, which some have described as a "war crime".

Russian planes are helping Syrian government forces to hit rebel groups, some of which are supported by the US and its Gulf Arab allies.

Russia is currently modernising its nuclear arsenal.

Mixed reactions trails appearance of crucifix in mosque

The mysterious sighting which occurred on Wednesday, September 28, attracted a mammoth crowd from Assakio and its environs with many praying for forgiveness and blessings.

The cross which is considered the symbol of Christianity was illuminated on the ground close to the mosque.

The sighting of the apparition was confirmed by residents of the area, one of them was Hajara Hussaini, who said she was the first to see the light in the shape of a cross on Wednesday, September 28 when her mother sent her on errand.
Her mother, Matan Liman also confirmed the strange appearance and said her daughter was gripped in fear when she returned.

Similarly, Muhammed Iliyasu who is the Chief Imam of Assakio Central Mosque said the sighting of the cross within the mosque premise confirmed that revelation was from God, affirming that “Jesus is also a prophet of God.”

But it appears some Nigerians have interpreted the reports of the mysterious sighting to mean the supremacy of one religion above the other.

However, others have doubted the credibility of the appearance of the strange cross, describing it as a fraud.

Yoshinori Ohsumi wins Nobel prize in medicine for work on autophagy

The Nobel prize in medicine has been awarded to a Japanese cell biologist for discoveries on how cells break down and recycle their own components.
Yoshinori Ohsumi, 71, will receive the prestigious 8m Swedish kronor (£718,000) award for uncovering “mechanisms for autophagy”, a fundamental process in cells that scientists believe can be harnessed to fight cancer and dementia.
Autophagy is the body’s internal recycling programme - scrap cell components are captured and the useful parts are stripped out to generate energy or build new cells. The process is crucial for preventing cancerous growths, warding off infection and, by maintaining a healthy metabolism, it helps protect against conditions like diabetes.
Dysfunctional autophagy has been linked to Parkinson’s disease, type 2 diabetes, cancer and a host of age-related disorders. Intense research is underway to develop drugs that can target autophagy to treat various diseases.
Speaking to reporters in Tokyo on Monday, Ohsumi said: “As a boy, the Nobel Prize was a dream, but after starting my research, it was out of my picture.”
He said he chose to focus on the cell’s waste disposal system, an unfashionable subject at the time, because he wanted to work on something different.
“I don’t feel comfortable competing with many people, and instead I find it more enjoyable doing something nobody else is doing,” he added. “In a way, that’s what science is all about, and the joy of finding something inspires me.”
Ohsumi, who was in his lab when he received the phone call from Thomas Perlmann, secretary of the Nobel Committee, admitted to being in a “slight state of shock” about the news.
The word autophagy originates from two Greek words meaning “self-eating”. It refers to the process in which cellular junk is captured and sealed in sack-like membranes, called autophagosomes. The sealed contents are transported to another structure called the lysosome, once considered little more than the cellular rubbish bin.
By studying the process in yeast cells, Ohsumi identified the main genes involved in autophagy and showed how the proteins they code for come together to build the autophagosome membrane. He later showed that a similar cellular recycling process occurs in human cells - and that our cells would not survive without it.
Juleen Zierath, a member of the Nobel committee, said: “Every day we need to replace about 200 to 300g of protein in our bodies... We are eating proteins every day, about 70g, but that’s not enough to take care of the requirement to make new proteins. Because of this machinery, we’re able to rely on some of our own proteins, maybe the damaged proteins or the long-lived proteins, and they are recycled with this sophisticated machinery so that we can sustain and we survive.”
Professor David Rubinsztein, deputy director of the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research at the University of Cambridge, said that Ohsumi’s discoveries had provided deep insights into the biology underpinning infectious diseases, cancers, Huntington’s and Parkinson’s.
“I’m very happy he’s got this year’s Nobel prize, it’s very well deserved,” he said. “His lab mainly works in yeast. They did the initial screens that enabled the discovery of key genes that are involved in autophagy. So many other labs have exploited his discoveries, directly or indirectly, to see why it’s important in diseases.”
Giovanna Mallucci, a professor of clinical neuroscience at the University of Cambridge, said that Ohsumi’s discoveries were paving the way for new approaches to treating diseases, from cancer to neurodegenerative illnesses.
“I think it’s very important that this area of science been recognised,” she said. “The important principle here is going for common mechanisms in disease. It opens up avenues to treating these disorders that are different from more conventional disease-specific approaches.”
Last year, the prize was shared by three scientists for discoveries that helped doctors fight malaria and infections caused by roundworm parasites.
The Chinese chemist, Tu Youyou , was recognised for her discovery of artemisinin, one of the most effective treatments for malaria. Two other researchers, Satoshi Ōmura, an expert in soil microbes at Kitasato University, and William Campbell, an Irish-born parasitologist at Drew University in New Jersey, shared the other half of the prize, for the discovery of avermectin, a treatment for roundworm parasites.
The winners of the physics, chemistry and peace prizes are to be announced later this week. The economics prize will be announced on Monday 10 October.

Opinion: wants President Buhari dead?

Editor’s note: President Muhammadu Buhari’s ten-day vacation to London for medical reasons caused the rumours that the Nigerian leader is seriously ill.

The health of a 73 year old Buhari was certainly an issue during the last year presidential campaign.

Olalekan Waheed Adigun of the Daily Trust shares his views on who wishes death upon President Buhari death.

HOW  FAYOSE  PLACED  AN “OBITUARY” OF  A  LIVING PERSON
What started as a big joke suddenly became a reality. In a desperate bid to stop the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari the heat of the 2015 presidential election, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, the Ekiti state governor, did the unthinkable.

He single-handedly placed an “obituary” of a living person on the front pages of The Punch and The Sun (January 19, 2015). What was his reason for this: “Will you allow history to repeat itself? Enough of state burials.”

These he told Nigerians who listened to him eagerly. Suffice to say that many political analysts described the advert as one of the lowest moments in the run-up to the election. Trust “Prophet” Fayose he did his utmost to make his “prophesies” come to pass. He told us all that Buhari had “advance stage” cancer, even coming up with a “medical report” from Ahmadu Bello Teaching Hospital (I meant the one in Ikare, not ABUTH please)!

NIGER  DELTA  AVENGERS’ THREAT  TO  KILL BUHARI
Let us spare the Fayose’s infantile theatrics for a while. Recently, a group that calls itself the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA), threatened to assassinate President Buhari if he goes on with his intention of going to Rivers state on official visit on Thursday 2 June, 2015.
An NDA member reportedly issued a threat to the president on his visit to the volatile region. In a phone monitored on the pirate Radio Biafra, the militants say the president will be signing his death warrant by visiting Ogoniland as scheduled. If the President is visiting the land with a history of oil spills to assess the extent of damage(s) done by multinational oil companies in the region, it still baffles rational minds to know those who really wish the president dead!

I happened to be one of the people who wished the president will call the bluffs of these so-called militants who threatened to assassinate him should he attempt to visit the region.

BUHARI’S  CANCELLED  VISIT  TO  OGONI
I was so disappointed to know that the president will later shelve his plans to attend the official launch of the cleanup of Ogoniland. The reason for my disappointed steams from the fact that, as Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the president should not be seen to be cowardly. This was the reason some of us supported him in the first instance. Is there any part of the federation that the president cannot visit? Can the so-called Avengers be more powerful than the Nigerian army? What becomes of the morale of hardworking soldiers under the Joint Task Force (JTF) fighting the militants when his C-in-C is “too afraid” of “assassination threats” from a ragtag group? That also reminds us, why the president made the visit a public announcement when he could have appeared unannounced?
Let us take the argument of these groups that they are indeed fighting a course on behalf of their “offended” ethnic groups. Let us assume for the sake of analysis that the NDA wants to “right the wrongs” meted out on them by the Federal government in the past.

To whose benefit really is the cleanup of Ogoniland when it is finally done?
On getting the news of the cancelled Buhari’s visit to Ogoni, a colleague of mine quickly, in a desperate attempt to attract my attention, told me how he wished to “disappoint” me with the piece of news having barely resumed work that day. “Buhari shouldn’t be afraid of these Niger-Delta Avengers because they are smaller than Boko Haram. Buhari should have gone to launch the cleanup.” I had to agree with him. While agreeing with him, I thought about the what the headlines will be in the online media. “Coward President Buhari Succumbs to Niger-Delta Militants” will be a good one on an anti-Buhari media platform. Is is just about the president not honouring his own visit, or is he just being “bullied” or misadvised?

I remember sometimes last year when late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s son, Chukwuma, was to be buried. The drama was so sensational that, just for some people to justify their arguments of Buhari “hating Igbos”, they won’t mind insulting the late son of the Zik of Africa even in death just because of his friendship with the President. He was buried, Buhari did not attend the ceremony and they were happy! To these ones, as long as Buhari has no ‘footings in the South East’, the party can continue.

If If Buhari had attended the event, the worst that would have happened
On the assassination threats coming from the Avengers is really nothing new. If Buhari had attended the event, the worst that would have happened would have been some pockets of protests here and there just to “show the world how unpopular Buhari’s administration is.” Their own problem is that they see it as a taboo that a Fulani man (a tribe they told the world hates them) is the one to commence the cleaning up of the oil spills in “Biafra land” a feat “our son” could not achieve in several years in power. Does it surprise anyone that as Buhari was planning to launch Ogoniland’s cleanup brought “our son” back home from his “hiding spot”?Buhari had attended the event, the worst that would have happened

MBAKA’S  PREDICTION  ON  BUHARI’S  ASSASSINATION
Earlier this year, the fiery Enugu Catholic priest and Founder, Adoration Ministry, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, alleged that there were plans by unnamed people to assassinate President Muhammadu Buhari. According to the clergyman, many people were plotting to kill the President because of what he described as his campaign against corruption, saying, “I am not a sycophant, but I want to tell you that so far, God is happy and he, who God has blessed, no one can curse. Many people are planning to kill Buhari – there are many plans on how to eliminate his life so that corruption will continue, so that embezzlement will continue.”

When Mbaka made this statement, the so-called NDA that threatened to assassinate Buhari was still in incubation. They were waiting to see whether some of their paymasters, like Sambo Dasuki will be granted a leave to travel abroad for “medical treatments” or granted bail on his present corruption charges. The question some of us ask ourselves is whether Dasuki comes from Niger-Delta that these ones are avenging!

The forces that have been battling the president before his elections are not giving up the fight as one may have thought. For these once, they will prefer a dead man occupying Aso Rock than for Buhari to withdraw from them their daily bread!

How Google can help find your lost phone or any other lost device

Search giant Google has rolled out an interesting tool, which will help users in finding their lost smartphone(s). To use the feature, users just need to type 'I lost my phone' on Google . The search query will bring up a special page which includes the record of all the devices that they have. Users then just need to click on the device they think have been lost.

Along with this, users can also choose to perform actions such as showing the location of the device on the map, or even locking the device's screen remotely from the page itself.

The feature is only limited to Android devices. In case you misplace your iPhone, it will tell you to use 'Find my
iPhone ,' which is a similar service offered by Apple for ios devices.

Even then, Google has iPhone users covered. It will help users lock their Google accounts to protect their privacy.

Apart from this, the page also allows easy access to a user's account hub, which shows data and personal preferences of the user. Users just need to say 'Ok Google , Show me my account,' and they will be taken to the hub to find the information.

China leads resistance to India joining nuclear export club NSG

VIENNA: China is leading opposition to a push by the United States and other major powers for India to join the main club of countries controlling access to sensitive nuclear technology, diplomats said on Thursday as the group discussed India's membership bid.

Other countries opposing
Indian membership of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG) include New Zealand, Ireland, Turkey, South Africa and Austria, diplomats said.

The 48-nation NSG aims to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons by restricting the sale of items that can be used to make those arms.

India already enjoys most of the benefits of membership under a 2008 exemption to NSG rules granted to support its nuclear cooperation deal with Washington, even though India has developed atomic weapons and never signed the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), the main global arms control pact.

Opponents argue that granting it membership would further undermine efforts to prevent proliferation. It would also infuriate
Pakistan, which responded to India's membership bid with one of its own and has the backing of its close ally China.

"By bringing India on board, it's a slap in the face of the entire non-proliferation regime," a diplomatic source from one of a handful of countries resisting India's push said on condition of anonymity.

A decision on Indian membership is not expected before an NSG plenary meeting in Seoul on June 20, but diplomats said Washington had been pressuring hold-outs, and Thursday's closed-door meeting was a chance to see how strong opposition is.

US secretary of state John Kerry wrote to members asking them "not to block consensus on Indian admission to the NSG" in a letter seen by Reuters and dated Friday.

China, however, showed no sign of backing down from its opposition to India joining
unless Pakistan becomes a member .

That would be unacceptable to many, given Pakistan's track record — the father of its nuclear weapons programme sold nuclear secrets to countries including North Korea and Iran.

"China, if anything, is hardening (its position)," another diplomat said.

Most of the hold-outs oppose the idea of admitting a non-NPT state such as India and argue that if it is to be admitted, it should be under criteria that apply equally to all states rather than under a "tailor-made" solution for a US ally.

Mexico's president said on Wednesday his country supports India's membership bid, but one Vienna-based diplomat said it still opposed the idea of it joining under conditions that did not apply equally to all.

BREAKING: President Buhari diagnosed with cancer by London Doctors

President Muhammadu Buhari has been diagnosed with cancer, according to sources at the London hospital where he reportedly underwent medical check-up.

The Nigerian leader arrived in London on Monday, June 6, 2016 on a 10-day vacation, his spokesman, Femi Adesina announcing a day in advance: “During the holiday, he will see an E.N.T. specialist for a persistent ear infection.

The president was examined by his Personal Physician and an E.N.T Specialist in Abuja and was treated. Both Nigerian doctors recommended further evaluation purely as a precaution.”

A source told News Express this morning, “President Buhari went for check-up hours after he arrived in London. The hospital has discovered the cause of Mr President’s illness to be cancer of the ear and brain. Let us start praying.”
